What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a skilled treatment performed by specially trained physical therapists using thin, sterile needles inserted into tight muscles and trigger points. The goal is to reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, relieve pain, and restore healthy movement patterns.

Unlike acupuncture, dry needling is based on modern anatomy, neuroscience, and movement science. It targets the underlying muscular dysfunction contributing to pain and movement limitations.

Dry Needling FAQs

Guidance, planning, and support—every step of the way.

Every patient is different. Your physical therapist will develop a treatment plan based on your diagnosis, goals, and response to treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

No. Although both treatments use thin needles, dry needling is based on modern anatomy and movement science. It focuses on treating muscle dysfunction, trigger points, and movement impairments.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. You may feel a brief muscle twitch or mild aching sensation during treatment. Some soreness afterward is normal and typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours.

Does dry needling hurt?

Yes. Dry needling is often incorporated into your regular physical therapy appointments when your therapist determines it will benefit your recovery.

Can dry needling be added to my current physical therapy visits?

What to Expect

Your treatment begins with a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation. During this appointment, your therapist will assess your movement, discuss your symptoms, and determine whether dry needling is appropriate for your condition.

If recommended, dry needling may be incorporated into your regular physical therapy visits or scheduled as a dedicated 30-minute treatment session, depending on your needs.

Most patients experience little discomfort during treatment. It’s common to feel temporary muscle soreness afterward, similar to the feeling after a challenging workout.
